The Fly With Me Fund has been raising money through private donations for four years. Prior to the establishment of the non-profit, the Silver family raised money for The MIND (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute at UC Davis in Sacramento. All monies raised have been put to use for the following purposes:
- children and/or families needing appropriate medical evaluations and care as it pertains to their Fragile X Syndrome diagnosis but do not have the financial resources to visit one of the 25 Fragile X Clinics in the United States
- children and/or families without financial resources to access one of the Fragile X Clinics in order to participate in clinical drug trials showing promise of an effective treatment
- individuals living with Fragile X-associated Tremor Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS)* or Fragile X-associated Primary Ovarian Insufficiency (FXPOI)* without the financial resources to obtain appropriate care at one of the Fragile X Clinics
- new medical equipment in research labs that relates directly to Fragile X Syndrome, equipment that helps children benefit from research work and a tangible legacy of our donors.
Assistance with travel related expenses is disbursed by either The National Fragile X Foundation or by the MIND Institute. Each organization maintains specific criteria for awarding the money based on need and they have continual access to the Fly With Me Fund .
